Some knowledge of 3D printing will always come in handy, but it's not necessary at all, you can create almost anything you want and then it can be printed without much hassle.

The only thing that I would recommend that you take into account when creating models for 3D printing, is to make sure that the mesh is perfect, without holes or problems of any kind, if you achieve that you can print almost anything.

It would be wise to print each design yourself, to prove that details of your design can actually be printed. You're going to get customers that have no experience printing, complaining that your models are not printable, or have issues. If you can prove that they physically can be printed, you're one step ahead in not having to issue a refund to a customer for a frivolous claim.
